LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — Simon Clement, previously the interim head men’s basketball coach at SUNY Sullivan, has been promoted to interim director of athletics.

Clement has played a crucial role in shaping the college’s athletic programs, a college spokesperson said. In his new position, he will lead efforts to expand and enhance the overall sports experience at SUNY Sullivan.

Clement will now oversee a diverse range of sports offerings aimed at fostering student success both on and off the field. SUNY Sullivan’s athletics program features competitive teams in basketball, baseball, volleyball, cross-country, track and field, and e-sports. The college competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II men’s and women’s basketball and baseball, and NJCAA Division III men’s and women’s cross-country and track and field.

SUNY Sullivan also offers various intramural sports that provide students with opportunities to engage in recreational athletic activities. These programs are designed for those who want to participate in sports in a more relaxed and social environment compared to varsity-level competition. Specific intramural sports include basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag football, workout challenges and e-Sports. Students can also participate in clubs such as men’s and women’s e-sports.

“Our athletics program is committed to providing students with opportunities to excel in sports while supporting their academic and personal growth,” Clement said. “With our outstanding facilities and dedicated coaching staff, I’m eager to build on our strong tradition and elevate our programs to new heights.”

Simon Clement was named head coach for the NJCAA Division II Sullivan Generals men’s basketball team in 2023, after five years as an assistant coach. Clement was a part of four consecutive Region XV championships; two district championships; and earned two bids to the NJCAA DII National Tournament (fourth place finish in 2021-22).

Clement earned a master’s degree in business administration the University at Albany. He played collegiate basketball at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy and at Johnson State College in Johnson, VT. He also played a year of collegiate golf while at Johnson State.

By hosting local tournaments, youth sports clinics and community events, SUNY Sullivan fosters a sense of unity and pride within the county, the spokesperson said. The college’s facilities, including the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse and the Diamond at Generals Park, serve as central venues for both collegiate and community activities, making SUNY Sullivan a key hub for sports and recreation in the region.
