SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — According to New York State voter registration data as of February 27, 2024, Sullivan County has 48,280 active registered voters. According to registration, 34.95 percent of those active voters are registered as Democrats, 32.09 percent are Republicans, 26.23 percent have not registered with any party, and 2.57 percent, 0.55 percent and 3.6 percent of those active voters are registered as Conservatives, Working Families and “Other,” respectively. See chart.

NY-100

With no incumbent in the race, of the candidates—Republican Lou Ingrassia or Democrat Paula Kay—neither will usher in a new era of representation in New York’s 100th Assembly District either. The 100th district encompasses all of Sullivan County with the exception of Fremont, which lands in the 121st Assembly District. It also includes part of Orange County.

Aileen Gunther (D), the current Assemblymember for the 100th district, will retire this year after over two decades in office. Gunther first ran for the assembly after the death of her husband, Jake Gunther, who held the seat previously.

Ingrassia has experience in county and municipal government and says he wants to address high taxes, growing energy costs, cashless bail and the migrant crisis.

Kay says she wants to support good health, education, housing, economic opportunity, clean air and water, and safe highways.

NY-51

Sullivan County voters make up the largest portion of the active voters in the 51st state Senate district. 23 percent of all active voters in the 51st state Senate district are Sullivan County voters.

Democrat Michelle Frazier will challenge incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker for the district. Oberacker has served as the state Senate 51st representative since 2021. The district includes all or part of nine counties, including all of Sullivan County.

Frazier highlights increasing housing stock, expanding child care and family support, passing the New York Health Act, and developing a centralized 911 system.

Oberacker would support for small businesses by rolling back restrictions and mandates, reforming bail policy, and supporting the No Farms, No Food Act for the protection of farmers.

U.S. Congress: NY-19

No, it’s not deja vu. Democrat Josh Riley will run against incumbent Marc Molinaro for New York’s 19th Congressional District again in the 2024 election. The 19th congressional district encompasses all of Sullivan County, as well as the Southern Tier, the Hudson Valley and more.

Molinaro says he supports regulatory reform for energy, wants to end the opioid crisis by curtailing the trafficking of illicit fentanyl, and promotes community-driven solutions to address mental health.

Riley says he wants to champion equity for all and supports the Respect for Marriage Act, cut taxes for the middle class by requiring the wealthy and large corporations to pay “their fair share,” and will defend abortion rights by working to restore Roe v. Wade into federal law.
